WOGE 494

Hi everyone,

Ole's WOGE 493 took us to the Outer Hebrides in Scotland for a view of a proterozoic anorthocite mountain on the Isle of Harris. Formerly, these islands were a possession of Norway (hard to think of Scotland as a Norweigan Hawaii!)

Here is WOGE 494. Please post a comment with the latitude, longitude and a description of the geological feature pictured. Happy hunting!

Parque Nacional Sierra de las Quijadas, Argentina

In addition to spectacular canyons, this park is famous for its fossils. "Another unit that deserves special attention is the Lagarcito Formation, which constitutes a 100-million-year-old freshwater lake paleoenvironment. Here, the physico-chemical conditions led to the formation of a paleontological deposit of exceptional characteristics, in which very delicate biological structures have been preserved, such as skulls and teeth of pterosaurs and vegetal imprints, among others. These fossil reservoirs are known as Konsew Lugersfute (sic)."

I have a feeling that that document originated as a scanned text, which has been run through OCR by a non-geologist... The Lagarcito Formation is especially rich in pterosaurs, and is classified as a Konservat-Lagerstätte.

It was not too hard to find, an eroded anticline core in semidesert climate on the southern hemisphere oriented NNW-SSE limits the alternatives to - well, east of Andes, in Argentina.

  2. Well done Ole, it had crossed my mind that having this in the southern hemisphere might make it too easy... over to you for the next one.
